Some people say that playing the drums is an excellent way to relax, de-stress, and is a great deal of fun. Basic drum lessons can be useful for the first couple of years, which is when you will have pretty much-covered everything you need by then. Playing the drums is basically about getting creative and can be an awesome instrument to master. Try to play a 4/4 on your hi-hat, which basically means count 1-2-3-4 evenly and hit your high hat with each beat. This is the most basic part of any drum beat.
Mix in a bass, each time you play 1 and 3, hit your hi-hat and bass drum together. Make sure you hit your hi-hat also, and not only the bass. This is where many drummers make the mistake. You may have noticed in between bass hits there is a small gap. Fill this gap by hitting your hi-hat and snare together on the beats 2 and 4. Your beat should sound like bass, snare, bass, snare.
Another slightly harder beat is the 8 notes. This means instead of counting the 1-2-3-4 we mentioned beforehand on your hi-hat, try playing 1,2,3,4. This is what is known as an 8 note. Still, hit your bass drum on the 1 and 3 beats and still hit your snare drum on the 2 and 4 beats, however, you now need to add 1 beat on your hi-hat hit between each bass and snare hit.
Helpful Tips for Amateurs
Remember drums are built to take punishment so hit them hard, nothing will be damaged. Try to practice every day, and if you are passionate, then be creative or look for drum lessons.
